Paint and Sip in Los Angeles? Here's What Couples Do Instead
If you're looking for a paint and sip in Los Angeles as a date, there's a version made for couples: Amor Mágico, a guided couples craft night on Thursday, November 12, 6 to 9:30 pm at Mi Alma Gardens in Hollywood. You still paint and you still sip, but you paint love charms for each other instead of copying the same canvas as everyone else in the room. $180 per couple.
I get the appeal of a paint and sip. A glass of wine, a brush, a reason to get off the couch. It's proven. It's also everywhere, and if you've been to one you know exactly how it goes. An easel each. A sample painting up front. Rows of people facing the instructor, and two people on a date staring at two separate canvases for two hours. You go home with a sunset that looks like forty other sunsets.
Fun? Sure. Romantic? Not really.
Paint and sip vs. a couples craft night
| Typical paint and sip | Amor Mágico | |
| Where you look | At your own canvas | At your person |
| What you paint | A copy of the sample | A love charm made for them |
| Seating | Rows facing the front | Round tables in a candlelit garden |
| Food | Usually snacks, if any | A shared grazing table all night |
| The vibe | Sorority girls' nights and club cliques | Adventurous, slightly tipsy couples who love to chat |
| Who leads | An instructor at the front | We give you cues all night, to each other and the couples around you |
| What you take home | A canvas | Painted love charms on a gold keychain, and a butter candle |
What painting for each other actually feels like
Here's the part a canvas can't do. You lean in close with a fine brush, a little paint on your fingertips, putting a tiny cherry or a crescent moon onto a charm that's going to live on your person's keys. They're watching you do it. You're pretending you're not showing off. Then you trade, and you see what they made for you.
From then on, every time they grab their keys, they think of that night. Of you.
In between, there's a grazing table to pick from, and a butter candle you make yourselves. You light it, it melts, and you swipe bread through the butter, straight to their lips... and the whole garden follows.
Why the room matters
A date for two in a room full of couples is a different animal. When the table next to you is laughing and leaning in, you lean in too. Nobody's the only ones being a little extra. That's where the boldness comes from, and it's why the night feels like a party instead of a class.
Still want a classic paint and sip?
Go! It's a great night out with friends. For a date, though, pick the one where you're facing each other. If you'd rather stay home, we have more Los Angeles date ideas that aren't another restaurant, too.
