Date Ideas in Los Angeles That Aren't Another Restaurant

The best date ideas in Los Angeles give you something to do together, not just somewhere to sit: paint love charms for each other at a couples craft night, graze your way through Grand Central Market, watch the city light up from Griffith Observatory, or picnic above Hollywood at Barnsdall Art Park. Here are seven, starting with the one we're hosting on Thursday, November 12.

Be honest. What did you do for your last anniversary? A reservation, a booth, a server asking if we're celebrating anything tonight, two phones face down by the bread basket, and the check landing right when the conversation finally got good. Don't get me wrong, I love a great restaurant. I'm culinary-trained, I will talk about a beurre blanc for twenty minutes if you let me. But a restaurant is the date everyone expects. It's the default.

And the default is how two people who really like each other end up eating out like roommates.

How not to be the boring date-night planner

The fix isn't a fancier table. It's a night where you're side by side, hands busy, guard down. That's where the teasing comes back. That's where the flirting sneaks in.

Seven Los Angeles date ideas that beat a reservation

1. Paint love charms for each other at a couples craft night

On Thursday, November 12, a garden in Hollywood goes candlelit for Amor Mágico, our couples craft night. You sit at round tables under the trees with paint on your fingertips, making a little love charm for your person while they make one for you, and the whole garden is doing the same thing. You make a butter candle, you graze a shared table, and we give you the cues all night, so nobody has to carry the conversation. 6 to 9:30 pm at Mi Alma Gardens, $180 per couple. Get tickets here.

2. Graze through Grand Central Market

Don't sit down. Walk the stalls downtown and order one small thing at a time, then feed each other a bite before you decide where to go next. Something salty here, something sticky and sweet there. Eating standing up, shoulder to shoulder, is a completely different date than eating across a table.

3. Go up to Griffith Observatory after dark

The building is free to walk into and stays open into the evening most days (it's closed Mondays, so check the hours before you go). Skip the exhibits if you want. Stand out on the terrace with the whole city glittering below you and let the view do half the work.

4. Picnic at Barnsdall Art Park

The hill in East Hollywood with the Frank Lloyd Wright house on top. Bring a blanket, a cheese that's been out of the fridge long enough to go soft and spreadable, a torn baguette, and stay for the sunset over the city. Feed them the first bite. Watch their face.

5. Walk the Venice Canals at golden hour

Little bridges, little boats, houses you'll both pretend you could afford. Hold hands. Point at the one you'd buy. That's the whole date, and it works.

6. Stay in, but make dinner a game

If you're staying home, don't just cook. Play. Try a blindfolded taste test, or turn your kitchen into a French bistro for two. Same food you'd order out. Completely different night.

7. A birthday that isn't dinner

Wondering what to do for your boyfriend's birthday in LA? Take any idea on this list and make it about him: his favourite bite at the market, the spot on the hill where you first said something real, a charm you painted just for him. A birthday they didn't see coming beats a table they've sat at before.

Why doing beats sitting

After eight years of teaching couples in a room together, I've watched the same thing happen every single time. Across a table, conversation is work. Every quiet moment has to be filled by somebody. Give those same two people something to make and the pressure drains right out. They tease. They reach over to fix each other's brushstroke. They lean in to see what the other one is painting... and suddenly they're looking at each other again.

That's the whole secret. Not a better restaurant. A better reason to lean in.

Questions people ask

What are good date ideas in Los Angeles that aren't dinner?

Pick something you do side by side: a couples craft night, grazing through Grand Central Market, Griffith Observatory after dark, a sunset picnic at Barnsdall Art Park, or a walk along the Venice Canals.

What's a unique date night in Los Angeles?

Amor Mágico, a guided couples craft night in a candlelit Hollywood garden on Thursday, November 12. You paint love charms for each other, make a butter candle, and graze a shared table. $180 per couple.

What can we do for an anniversary in LA besides a restaurant?

Make something together. A craft night, a picnic with a view, or a game-night dinner at home all give you a reason to face each other instead of a menu.

Is the couples craft night a paint and sip?

No. There's no canvas to copy and no instructor at the front. You paint love charms for each other, and we give you cues all night that get you talking to your person and the couples around you.

Do we have to be crafty?

Not at all. If you can hold a brush, you're fine. The charm is the excuse. Your person is the point.
