Crafts for Couples: Make Something Together, Not Just Dinner

The best crafts for couples are small, a little messy, and made for each other rather than side by side: paint something your person will carry, press a flower from a night you both remember, build a board of bites and plate it for them, or write the recipe of your first date out by hand. In Los Angeles, you can do it with a whole garden of couples at Amor Mágico, a candlelit couples craft night on Thursday, November 12.

Picture the usual Tuesday. Two people, one couch, two glowing rectangles, a show neither of you picked, and somebody asking "wait, did we already see this one?" Don't get me wrong, I love a good couch night. But nothing about it asks you to look at each other.

Now picture paint on your fingertips. A fine brush, a tiny heart, your person leaning over your shoulder to see what you're making for them. Same couch, maybe. Completely different night.

Why making something works when talking doesn't

I've spent eight years teaching couples in a room together, and here's what I know: when your hands are busy, the pressure to perform disappears. Nobody has to come up with a great question. The silence fills itself with the work, and somewhere in there, the teasing starts. "That's a heart? That's a potato." That's the moment. That's the date.

Five crafts for couples to try at home

1. Paint something they'll carry

A blank keychain, a small wooden tag, a phone charm. Paint something only the two of you would understand, a cherry, a moon, the number of the apartment where you met, and trade at the end. The rule: you can't see theirs until it's done. Every time they grab their keys, there you are.

2. Press a flower from a night that mattered

The bouquet from an anniversary, a sprig from a walk, a single bloom stolen from a wedding table. Press it between heavy books for a couple of weeks, then frame it together with the date written underneath in your handwriting. Slow? Yes. That's part of it.

3. Build a board and plate it for each other

Cheese soft enough to swipe, a few figs split open, honey that drips off the comb if you're lucky, a square of dark chocolate. You each build half the board for the other person, then feed them the first bite of what you made. It's a craft. You can eat it. Win.

4. Write out the recipe of your first date

On a card, by hand: what you ate, what you drank, what they wore, what you were too nervous to say. Write your versions separately, then compare. You'll remember it differently, and the differences are the best part.

5. Make a scent for the house

Simmer orange peel, a cinnamon stick and a few cloves on the stove, adjust it together until it smells like "us," and write the recipe down. Next time the house smells like that, you'll both remember the night you made it.

The one you can't make at home

On Thursday, November 12, a garden in Hollywood goes candlelit for Amor Mágico, our couples craft night. You paint love charms for each other and take them home on a gold keychain. You make a butter candle together, light it, and swipe bread through the melted butter, straight to their lips. There's a grazing table out all night, a welcome drink in your hand when you arrive, and we give you the cues, so nobody has to carry the conversation. And the whole garden is doing it with you, which is exactly where the boldness comes from.
